Character Information

Name: Yumi Ishiyama
Age: 15
Fandom: Code Lyoko

Appearance:

Yumi’s a teenage girl of Japanese nationality. She stands about five feet tall, has straight choppy black hair and pale skin. She’s rather skinny, though it belies the strength she’s gained through her martial arts training. She’s fond of tight clothes that bare her midriff and especially the color black. Her current favorite outfit consists of a black shirt with blue flowers that falls over the shoulders, black and purple Capri pants, and black army boots.

Yes, I’m aware the show’s art is a little ridiculous and no, her head is not, in fact, that big.

Canon Point: A few days after Echoes

Personality: Yumi is only 15, stuck in that no-man’s-land between growing into an adult and letting go of the baggage still left over from childhood. She’s fairly…well, OK, very guarded around people she doesn’t know, often using anger and defensiveness to defend herself emotionally. She’s quick to threaten, but slow to actually act on it. It takes a lot of pushing to actually get her to punch you in the eye, but not a lot to get her to ball her fist and claim she will.

This is all in the service of protecting the easily hurt, sensitive, sentimental girl that’s within. It sounds sort of silly, but Yumi has a problem with taking things personally and then passive-aggressively giving the offending party the cold shoulder. Once her best friend forgot to wish her a happy birthday and she sulked for two days. She’s bad at expressing her emotions in general…expect a lot of unsure sentences that end in question marks when she has to talk about uncomfortable things. Especially when she inevitably lets it go for a long time without a confrontation. Which she does often.

She may be difficult to know, but people who do manage to earn her friendship find an intelligent, responsible, intuitive, and kind young woman. Yumi’s rather a clever girl, quick on the uptake with good reflexes besides. She pulls at threads, looks where she’s told not to, and picks up on clues with relative ease, and she finds this much easier if she has someone to protect. Yumi often finds herself being the big sister to the younger kids she befriends, an equal to the kids her age, and a respectful responsible youth to adults.

Though she can be over-emotional in her personal life, she keeps her head the face of danger. Yumi is perfectly capable of stepping up and taking charge when it’s needed, and she’s not afraid of confronting dangerous people. When there’s a fight for the right thing to be started, she’ll join without hesitation or else she’ll start it up herself.

Game Specific

Suitability:

Yumi has certainly done her share of fighting, considering she’s spent the last two years of her life fighting against monsters in a virtual world, as well as constant (often once a week) attacks in the real world, often from humans...or human shaped monstrosities. She’s no slouch when it comes to fighting for her life, having serviceable knowledge and skills of Indonesian martial art pencak silat. She’s shown to be an extremely nimble and graceful fighter as well.

She’ll never get over her reluctance to kill, that much is for certain. She’ll hold on to the disgusted feeling of being more-or-less forced to kill as long as she’s here. She’s a fighter, and stubborn besides. But it’s hard to live in Santa Destroy just doing menial jobs, and Yumi isn’t stupid. It’s not going to escape her notice that death doesn’t seem to be a lasting condition around here. She’ll resist what amounts to a human cockfight in any way she can, but one girl’s will can only go so far...

Weapon:

Two tessen fans. While Yumi’s fans in the cartoon were practically laser guided boomerangs that couldn’t be damaged and could cut through anything, real fans aren’t so tricked out. The fans she has for this adventure curve back when thrown, though not perfectly, and are sharp enough to cut through tissue but not bone. They can be knocked aside pretty easily, and can deflect blows/shots, but not without suffering dents/cuts that affect performance.

Samples

Log/Third Person Sample:

Yumi wasn’t prepared for this. She could handle XANA attacks- that was no problem. She had a villain, a force that wanted to take over the world, and would kill her and everything she loved. She had to fight people, sometimes, but XANA always protected them from harm, not that she could do too much against an invincible enemy who could electrocute her to death anyway. It was simple before. Go to Lyoko, fight monsters, save the world.

That was easy. Compared to this, that was a cakewalk.

Yumi’d never been called upon to kill another human before. And these jerks were trying to make sure she had to.

She wiped the sweat from her brow, and shakily dragged herself off the bed. This dumb motel’s air conditioning never worked and for what she was trying to do to pay for it, it was hard to not take it personally. The only thing she could find for it was a couple of whacks.

She had been brooding on that (probably filthy) bed all day and it left her stiff and sore, wobbling over to the window. This wasn’t much of a break from the thoughts she was alone with. It wasn’t fair, it was cruel, this was a bloodsport, she was kidnapped, and alone, and not sure what to do about it, and she had to kill or be killed and-

The crash startled her out of that in a bit, and she realized her attempt at percussive maintenance had knocked the whole air-conditioner right out of the window.

Whoops. They were probably going to charge her to fix that too. She probably didn’t even hit it that hard. It was just installed on the cheap.

This a sign or something, wasn’t it? Don’t become a serial murderer and all you have to look forward to are days of cheap motel rooms only paid for through intensive manual labor, still trapped in an awful slummy town, still fearing for your life, every moment anticipating an attack from somebody who’s playing the game but lower ranked then you. Have a nice life.
Forget it. Yumi wasn’t going to sink that low. Santa Destroy was going to drag her kicking and screaming into this stupid tournament. There had to be other people in this town willing to fight this organization. She’d just have to find them. And do it without clueing the UAA in. And then defeat them.

Oh boy…That wasn’t a huge task at all.

Journal Entry/First Person Sample:

[Collecting coconuts. That was it. That was all that was available to her. She was supposed to go around and make coconuts fall, and when she’d asked about a helmet, they’d laughed in her face.

She wasn’t the only one out here doing this, either. This guy was eyeing the tree she’d picked, and glaring at her. And he wouldn’t stop, either. He’d watch her for awhile, and every time she’d look back, he’d look away.]

Hey, you’ve got some great graffiti to look at over on that wall, so why don’t you stare at it instead of me.

[She only really considered not being rude to the likely assassin after she turned back to the job. It didn’t seem to make him back off either. Now he was glaring outright, and it was starting to unnerve her.]

Look, there’s plenty of trees in the field. Why do you want this one so bad?

[He was coming over now, and he seemed to be reaching for something…it was a weapon. That’s all it probably would be in Santa Destroy.]

No need to turn this into a fight…

[That mumble was accompanied by the metallic ting of an iron fan opening. If this place cared about anything other than fighting, that last sentence might have been true...]

Also, a dear_mun post
